Alcohol and weight gain [alcohol and weight gain] [dry white wine]

I have rcently (last year) with about 9 pounds in weight. Ive been drinking more alcohol and more often). I cut a lot, but the weight is not gone.

do you think that alcohol makes a significant difference in weight? I drink and soda, about three bottles a week and a couple of vodka with diet coke every night.

Reply:I drink moderate, and diet a lot. And I never gained weight.
And when I see people who drink a lot a lot, they are all veeery skinny…

Many people who drink a lot are not very skinny. Why do you think they call it a "beer gut?"

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram. FYI protien and carbs contain 4 calories per gram and fat contains 9 calories per gram.

So if you are drinking vodka and coke each night, you not only have a lot of calories from the vodka, you also have the calories in the soda (one can has around 130-150 calories).

So yes, the alcohol can definitely make you gain weight. Also if you are drinking as much as you say (nightly), you may want to look into the signs of alcoholism. You do not want to fall into that trap.

Good luck and take care of yourself! I wish you well!

Reply:Alcohol not only has a lot of calories, but it has a really high sugar content. So if you're trying to watch your weight, then yes you have to watch the alcohol.

Actually alcohol doesn't have much sugar. It's the mixers, or the other components (like in sweet wine) that have sugar. However, during alcohol metabolism, it is broken down into sugars, and that affects your blood sugar level and insulin reaction in a similar way.

Reply:In addition, if I recall what I read correctly, when you are trying to lose weight, your liver functions in metabolizing fat. However, your body perceives alcohol as a toxin, and the livers priority is to metabolize toxins. So, when you drink alcohol, your liver works to metabolize that first, so fat is not metabolized as efficiently. Alcohol also tends to reduce people's will power, so they are more likely to overeat or eat the wrong foods. It also results in lower energy levels, and less inclination to get exercise.

I know what I speak about…. about 5 years ago, I became a daily drinker. During that time, I gained over 70 pounds, from 148 up to 220. I have lost 40 of it so far. I have worked hard to change my drining habits to weekends only, but the temptation is still there.

Reply:I agree, there really is very little place for alcohol in a serious weight loss program, it should be a rare treat.
