Bad Reaction to Splenda [candy bar] [numbness]
I tried Splenda the first time (a small bar). I had terrible heartburn (never), followed by vomiting (3x), dizziness, tingling foreign / numbness in my upper body, and rash on my stomach. I wonder if this is a side effect of the product, whether it was an allergic reaction. Has anyone else had this.

Reply:When I was pregnant 3 yrs ago, I asked the Dr. about artificial sweeteners. She told me she would not recommend artificial sweeteners, but to try Splenda since it is "natural." Needless to say, I checked it out on the web & found that no trials had been done with pregnant women. I decided to stick with regular old sugar while I was pregnant. But, knowing what I know now I am appalled that a Dr., especially an OB would recommend such a thing to a pregnant woman!
Candy Making Made Easy
Reply:I never realized that Splenda was chlorinated sugar. I always thought it was so much better because it was "made from sugar".Its amazing what a little marketing can do and how deceptive it can be. The manufacturers claim that "Splenda is derived from real sugar…"
I've said this before, but think about it – cow manure is "derived from green pastures" but it's highly toxic and I would not eat it!

But I guess, like I've said before, mostly everything is bad for you nowadays. I guess I'll keep using whatever floats my boat. But I am sorry that you got sick, that sucks…hope you're feeling better.

Reply:That's funny about the Crystal Lite. I never really thought about how certain ingredients could be masked. So, would the chlorination process used in manufacturing Splenda make it dangerous to those with Chlorine allergies?

Reply:I never really thought about whether or not the Chlorine would hurt those allergic to it. I guess it would have to. That would be really bad if someone with a chlroine allergy had Splenda simply becuase they didn't know not to have it.As one with many food allergies, I have learned to lean on the side of caution. There are many ways that manufacturers get around listing all ingredients. For example, when a food lists "natural flavors" you never really see what makes up "natural flavors" but it could be some concoction of natural and artificial ingredients and you would never really know for sure. There are many other similar examples.
You also need to be careful in restaurants… I have gone as far as asking for ingredient lists or to see a label before ordering an item – you can't believe what they do to some food.
about a year ago I went to have a CT Scan in the hospital and they gave me a radioactive drink (you have to drink like 64 oz in 20 minutes). When they brought it to me I asked them what was in it and there reply was "oh, its no problem, its just Crystal Lite." Not wanting to explain myself I just told them that I don't consume Crystal Lite and they would have to find another way to get the radioactive substance in me. They explained that they used Crystal Lite to mask the horrible taste of the solution and they seemed completely puzzled as to how to resolve this problem. So I asked "How about mixing it with water???" They seemed shocked that I would make such a ridiculous request but I finally convinced them to do it. After all the fuss they made, you know what it tasted like? Water.

Reply:Gosh! Glad I read this…I'm allergic to aspartame and had been thinking about trying Splenda. I was concerned about the chlorine distillation of it as I am allergic to chlorine. Guess I'll just forget about trying it….

Reply:I tried the new Diet Coke with Splenda this weekend. I drank about half a two-liter bottle. Last night I developed a horrid rash, had severe itching and was just miserable. I thought maybe it was mosquito bites….
This morning the rash got worse. My husband and I racked our brains trying to figure out what caused this rash. The ONLY thing different was the Diet Coke.
In searching the internet, it appears that others are having this negative reaction to Splenda.
I will NEVER use this again! I'm a little better now, after taking some Benedryl and drinking lots of water to flush the system.

Shame, too. I just bought a box to try it, but I'm having second thoughts. I'm not diabetic, but I wanted to try it for weight loss purposes (cutting down on sugar).
Reply:Sorry, I don't have an ingredient list. I discarded the remaining candy and it is not posted on the web. It was Russell Stover low carb toffee squares. It was really delicious (tasted just like sugar), but now I'm afraid to eat anything with Splenda.
Reply:I used to put granulated sugar on everything and in everything, but since i've tried splenda i havent used regular sugar since. In my opinion, it taste better than sweet n low and its great in coffee.

Usually a true allergic reaction will not occur until 2nd exposure to a substance. What else exactly was in the product? Can you post the complete ingredient list?
I will add that Splenda is chlorinated sugar, which can't be good for anyone! I avoid artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols (all of them) like the plague!
Reply:guy,
I'll bet you had some MALTITOL in that product.
