Help me look good naked (looking for advice about Relacore, Cortidrene) [bad carbs] [waist hips]

Hi Folks,

Here is my situation:
Im 53 “, 125 lbs., Size 4, I am diligent in my training (3-4x/week kickboxing, strength training, step aerobics and yoga), and Im a little less diligent in watching my diet, although I try my watch portions, avoid and fried foods.

I him in pretty good shape – looks great with clothes on, but I have this nagging problem of a flabby mid-section (usually ABS, but my waist, hips and thighs get pretty weak when my diet goes to hell). When Ive actually been good about following diets like South Beach, I have seen good results in getting my middle section remains poor.

I ” ma self-diagnosis foodie and I will never be able to be myself limiting carbohydrates completely in the long term. Ive heard a lot about the cortisone pills such as Relacore and Cortidrene who claim that this problem nipped in the bud.

Does anyone have experience with one or both? Please share your thoughts with me . I want good naked!

Thanks look!

Reply:If you are perceived as "hot" take it as a complement :) Men dont get hung up on the little things that us women hate. I think your problem is a negative body image. I think this is what needs to be addressed. If you feel a tummy tuck would make you feel better then thats up to you. (personally i think an ugly scar is far worse that a a bit of extra skin) What is you boyfriend like? Does he keep telling you you're hot, is he critical of the way you look, or somewhere in between?

Reply::) Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I'm generally skeptical about diet supplements and really do believe in consistent healthy diet and exercise as the best way to lose and maintain weight, but I also think there's only so much diet and exercise can do for your truly problem areas. I do have a bloating tendancy, which has been helped a lot by switching to Yasmin as my bcp.

I think my ab-flab problem stems from a combo of genetics and several years of putting on 10 extra lbs. (mostly in my mid-section) and then losing and then gaining and losing again. I've been examining myself and I'm fairly certain it's really more loose skin and not fat. So I've been kind of looking at these cortisol pills that claim to target this area as a last resort before considering a tummy tuck. Sigh.

This problem has had a huge effect on me psychologically and with my sex life. Men in general view me as "hot," but ironically I'm not even comfortable being seen naked by my boyfriend of 3 1/2 years (who BTW has a naturally chiseled physique, although he too is his own worst critic). I'm so sick of having such a negative body image and only focusing on what's "wrong" with me.

Thanks again.

Reply:Pills are definately not the way to go. I dont believe they work and frankly, i think they can be dangerous.

Could the flab be mostly bloat? You're a very healthy weight and you do quite a bit of exercise so you should be quite toned. What im suggestiong is that maybe your diet if making you feel/look bloated.

For instance, i stick to a calorie controlled diet where i eat healithy. I eat plenty of fruit and veg, i avoid white bread like the plauge (gives me awfull stomach cramps), i hardly ever eat rice or pasta cos it makes me bloat, i avoid excess salt (makes you retain fluid) and i drink plently of water. These are pretty easy things to stick to. I know eating this way helps me stay slim because my boyfriend has come to visit this weekend and we have been going out for food. I've been eating pizza and currys etc and today i feel awful. My stomach is all bloated and i've got stomach cramps. Bassically i am not feeling sexy!

My point to all this is that rubbishy foods can have awfull side effects apart from weight gain and this is why you might feel you look fat. Try making some changes to your diet which excludes junk foods and you might see a massive difference :)

Hope this helps

As you already admitted, when you were on Southbeach this was less of a problem for you. I am not suggesting you go on Southbeach, because you are not overweight. You now need to focus on refining your diet and excercise plan to improve your health and tone your body.

Excess carbs are known to contribute to mid-section flab, as will high fat foods. I would never suggest that one eliminate carbs entirely from their diet (I am not a fan of low-carb diets), however there is a middle ground that most people forget exists. That middle ground is rationing your carbs to a reasonable, healthy level, without eliminating or overdoing them. Low-fat diets have a tendency to be a bit carb-heavy, which can also be a problem. The key is balance balance balance.

Balance means different things to different people, but there are some numbers that work quite well for 90-95% of the population. Try getting 50% of your calories as high quality carbs, 25% of your calories as fat, and 25% of your calories as protein. This type of balance will optimize liver function, which in turn will improve your body's ability to metabolize fat.

I don't know your age, but based on your other information, and guessing that you are 20-30 years old, you probably need to consume about 1600 calories per day to maintain your weight. Referencing the balance noted above, your diet would need to consist of 800 carb calories, 400 protein calories, and 400 fat calories each day.

Break that down into 3 meals and 2 snacks:
3 meals of 400 calories comprised of 50 carb grams, 25 protein grams, and 11 fat grams
2 snacks of 200 calories comprised of 25 carb grams, 12.5 protein grams, and 5.5 fat grams.

Next step is make sure that the quality of your food is high.
Ideal carb sources include fresh or frozen veggies (raw or cooked), whole grains, legumes, brown rice, potato, fresh whole fruit.
Ideal protein sources include fresh lean meat, poultry, fish, hard cheese, eggs, legumes, and soy.
Ideal fat sources include olive, canola, grape seed, and peanut oils, nuts and seeds (in extreme moderation), and all your proteins.

Omit whereever possible all chemical additives and preservatives, refined flour and sugar products (junk carbs), bread, pasta, canned foods (fruit, veggies, soups, gravies), processed cheese slices, deli meats, etc etc. All these food items will burden the liver making it MORE difficult for you to metabolize the fat you consume and burn your existing body fat.

Other important steps in improving metabolic function include increasing water consumption (best if you drink only water and in your case, 64 oz per day), and increasing fiber to about 30-35 grams per day (which will happen automatically if you follow the diet advice above).

Next I recommend that you work with a fitness trainer or seek advice elsewhere on how to best tone your stomach, abs, thighs, etc. If you build muscle and lose fat you may actually gain pounds on the scale, but you will look better (especially naked)!

Combining these efforts WILL work. Just remember that if you increase your activity, you may need to increase your calorie intake, so you would need to adjust most of the numbers above.
