How much water should you drink each day? [water intoxication] [how much water should you drink a day]
Ive heard of a thing called water intoxication, and I was shocked considering I drink on average about 5-8 bottles of 1 liter per day. That is only on hot days, I usually drink about 2 or 3. Is that bad and what can I do that I can still drink a lot, but safe? Care?
Reply:The basic rule is one ounce of water per kilo (2.2) pounds of body weight per day. (150 pounds = 75 ounces or about 10 glasses.
If you really want to do it right, then you should NOT count any other beverage other than water during the day. In other words coffee, soda, iced tea DO NOT COUNT towards your daily total. Your kidneys will thank you and after about 10 days your bladder will have adjusted and your number of trips to the facility will level out.
Bottoms UP!
Reply:I'm not sure how much water it takes to cause water intoxication, but I've heard it's an insane amount. It happens when you drink enough to substantially decrease the concentration of electrolytes in your system. It's very rare, and a lot of cases are of teenage girls, ect. who are trying to lose weight and go way overboard. The only person I know personally who has suffered from water intoxication is literally mentally ill.
If you've been drinking that much water and it hasn't affected you, I wouldn't be worried. And on those hot days, your body is losing a lot of water and you need to drink a lot. Unless you up your water intake to an extreme amount, you're fine.

Reply:2-3 liters is fine. And more is generally fine, unless you are drinking it in a very short period of time and not getting enough sodium. Water intoxification is very rare and more common in long distance marathon runners due to the large amount of liquid consumed in a small amount of time without the replacement of electrolytes.
