How To Boost Your Metabolism

Hot Metabolism
Reply:Hello everyone!!
If weight gain is due to a drop in metabolism, then how does a person lose any weight without cutting out major amounts of calories, etc? Also…given that working out can boost metabolism, does anyone know how long does it take after beginning a workout regimen for the results (in metabolism) to take effect? Are the effects lasting? And given that eating smaller, more frequent "meals" is recommended by so many, I am wondering just what these "meals" consist of? Is it just like a snack? Or 1/2 a sandwich?

Weight gain is not due to a drop in metabolism by itself. It is due to taking in more calories than your body needs. The drop in metabolism caused by starvation only lowers that calorie threshold. You can still lose weight on a slower metabolism. It'll just be harder because you will have to lower calories even more and you'll have less margin for error.

If you do moderate intensity cardio, the metabolism will only be elevated during the workout. If you do high intensity cardio or weight lifting, the metabolism will be elevated both during and after the workout. However, the "afterburn" effect depends on eating within 1 hour of ending the workout. A high intensity workout will have depleted both muscle glycogen and blood sugar and the body will be start burning fat. But after 1 hour past the end of your workout, the body will think there's something wrong and slow your metabolism.

A meal should be small enough to give you just a slight caloric deficit. It should not be a snack however. A meal should always include lean protein and complex high fiber carbs. An example of breakfast would be oatmeal and egg whites. An example of lunch would be chicken breast on whole wheat bread with lettuce and tomato. An example of dinner would be salmon with green veggies. The ratio of carbs to protein will vary depending on the time of day, but the bottom line is that if it doesn't have a decent amount of protein, don't consider it a meal.

Here are some natural ways to boost your metabolism or at the very least keep it from slowing down:
1) Eat a meal every 3 hours.
2) Eat lean protein with every meal. Eating protein will temporarily elevate your metabolism because protein requires more energy to digest compared to carbs and fat.
3) Exercise

When you combine these rules, you'll discover you can eat more and still lose weight. A lot of people thinking eating more will cancel out the exercise. But the great thing is they actually help each other boost your metabolism. Ever since I switched to 5 meals a day, I noticed I could eat more calories than I thought I could and still lose weight.

Reply:I agree with eating small meals throughout the day. Working out will also increase your metabolism. A lot of people try eating less often and too few calories, and all that does is make your metabolism worse.

Hello everyone!!
I have been advised as well that skimping that much on food will make your body essentially think that it is starving (Well, ok let's be realistic…it IS!!) and that instead of losing weight, your body will hold onto it. Not sure how reliable this info is, but if accurate, then I am at a loss!! If weight gain is due to a drop in metabolism (i.e., you are not gorging yourself on McDonald's and are somewhat active) then how does a person lose any weight without cutting out major amounts of calories, etc? Also…given that working out can boost metabolism, does anyone know how long does it take after beginning a workout regimen for the results (in metabolism) to take effect? Are the effects lasting? And given that eating smaller, more frequent "meals" is recommended by so many, I am wondering just what these "meals" consist of? Is it just like a snack? Or 1/2 a sandwich? (Boy, I am just full of questions! :dizzy: Sorry!)

Metabolism Secrets
Reply:You may want to check to see if you have thyroid disease as this can slow your metabolism. Last year I did search after search on the internet to try to find a "magic" solution to raise my metabolism and I came to realise that I had slow metabolism from a thyroid problem. BTW I had the most "normal" looking labs so thru an ultrasound it was discovered that I had a nodule. So you may want to rule out anything medically.

Reply:Nope, there isn't any magic pill to speed it up. What worked for me was to increase the frequency of my eating; instead of skipping a bunch of meals and having a big lunch or a big dinner, I began to eat 6-8 times/day, and each meal would be small (carbs & protein). What I understand is that if you are constantly feeding your body, you are keeping your metabolism "on," and this apparently helps it to stay "on" more often. I'm sure there's a more scientific explanation out there, but I wouldn't know the first thing about explaining *that.* All I know is that my metabolism was shot to Hell when I was anorexic as a teenager, and I thought mine was beyond hope of recovering; since doing this, however, my body has been MUCH better at metabolising my food, and I haven't had nearly as many problems w/heartburn or indigestion.

Hope that helps!
