Lift some weights people! [weight training routines] [aversion]

Hi everyone,
Ive posted in this section, but overall I look on the various topics. One thing that continues to amaze me is the lack of that I see when people talk about how they train. It seems to me that many of you have an to actually go into a weight lifting regiment. I know some of you already do and I welcome those who exercise the right way.

Doing cardio is all well and good when you try to lose weight, but if you want to keep the weight off you need a lift . Building a solid foundation of muscle mass will keep the weight off when you reach your goal, because you need more calories to maintain your maintenance weight.

Simply aerobics will do to get your weight down, but I think your weight to lose the unhealthy lifestyle, because your body is burning a lot of muscle while the fat loss. Furthermore, weight training burns lots of calories when your muscles breakdown of training and then rebuild themselves as they recover. Lifting weights will tone your muscles and do wonders for loose skin from weight loss.

Just give you a little background about me Im in the process of losign the weight of the past five months. Ive gone from 285 pounds to 240. Im also a lot of fat and muscle gained through a strict weighlifting routine.

I know its a lot easier to just an aerobics tape and get a routine, but if you want the results happen faster and stay longer you need make yourself a weight bench. Join a gym, a set of dumbbells, your children and live weights, etc. .

Hit weights boys and girls.

Reply:But even though I'm not really overweight, and I don't want to gain weight. Can't I just combine weightlifting with cardio?????

I guess I didn't clarify what I meant by saying you need to lift weights. I just meant that it needs to be part of your routine. Ask any trainer or health professional and they'll tell you that three things are essential to getting into shape. The most important is diet. The second most important part is weightlifting. In order to build the solid foundation of calorie burning muscle and to tone you up. The third part is of course cardio. This will help you increase your fat loss as you burn more calories then you take in each day.

So remember it goes 1) Diet 2) Weightlifting 3) Cardio in that order.

My workout routine generally consists of running a mile on the treadmill and doing 21 minutes on the eliptical machine. Then I hit the weights. One or two body parts for each time I workout.

Check out this site and go to the training section for some nice workouts that will get you started.

Definitely combine weight lifting and cardio. Everyone should be doing both regardless of their weight loss goals.

Why are you so worried about gaining weight? It's just a number on the scale that only you will know. I weigh 151 but most people think I weigh 140 because that's how I look.

Reply:You will lose weight faster if you incorporate weightlifting into your routine. I've lost about 15 pounds since joining Golds gym 8 weeks ago and I've probably put on 2 pounds of muscle. So altogether I've lost 17 pounds of fat. Basically the most important thing is being able to maintain your weight once you reach your goal. If you simply do it by aerobics your going to eat some of your muscle through cardio's catabolic nature. Therefore you'll need lower maintinence calories and have to maintain a very strict diet to stay at your goal weight. Believe me you won't be a happy camper.

In contrast following a weight regiment will allow you to most likely eat like everyone else, bear in mind that this doens't mean you can pig out, due to the fact that you you've got a good foundation of calorie burning muscle.

Reply:guy, you cannot gain muscle without gaining weight. The only way you could not gain weight is if you lost fat while you gained muscle and the two cancelled each other out. Ultimately, you should not worry about what the scale says. Focus on inches, percent body fat, and what you see in the mirror. Why does it bother you if the number on the scale goes up? No one will know except you. You could be 150 pounds but as long as you look like 120, who cares what the scale says?

guy, fat CANNOT turn into muscle and muscle does NOT weigh more than fat. 1 pound of muscle takes up one-third the space that one pound of fat does.

Reply:[QUOTE=guy]You might gain weight – but only because the fat turns into muscle

Hi there. I've been working out with weights for a little over two months. The more I get into it, the better I feel.
One thing, though – fat does not turn into muscle.

Here is an excerpt from a fitness magazine (not sure I could post the link):

""""You simply cannot transform fat tissue into muscle,
Muscle mass and fat are two different animals: Muscle is active tissue that burns calories around the clock even as you sleep, kind of like an engine running in neutral. When you move around, you burn more calories, just like a car will consume more gas the faster you go. Fat, on the other hand, is just a storage of excess energy. It does nothing but sit there with its sole goal in life to be a spare tire around your waist until you put in the effort to burn it off. Bodyfat is not particularly useful except as padding against bumps, as insulation to preserve warmth, and as a convenient surface where you can balance a can of beer while watching the game, as frequently demonstrated by my potbellied father. You need some bodyfat to stay healthy of course, but unless you're walking around with razor-sharp abs and sunken, fat-depleted cheeks year-round, you probably have nothing to fear""""

Reply:But for those of us who really care about numbers on the scle (no matter how silly it sounds), is there a way to avoid gaining the pounds?

Reply:You might gain weight – but only because the fat turns into muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. However you will get "smaller" and that's what it's all about. But, when you get more muscle, it uses fat more efficiently so eventually because there is more muscle, the fat becomes less and less and gets used up by the muscle (does this sound right all you pros?) Eventually you will start losing weight because your body will seek it's correct healthy weight (if you eat properly)

Close, guy, but not quite! :) Muscle doesn't actually weigh more than fat, it's just denser. A lb of anything is going to weigh a lb… you are right though in that you will look smaller as the fat disappears and the muscle gets built and/or
toned. So you might not see any loss on the scale, but you will see a change in how your body looks as it "firms up"- nice tight muscles looks a lot better than a bunch of flabby fat!

Reply:I have a question about this (also posted on another board, but am trying here too). How can you lift weights and gain muscle without gaining weight?

Reply:When I exercise (when I actually do :o ) I always include weight training. It makes me smaller faster and I just feel stronger. I actually prefer weight lifting to running or aerobics activity (not sure why). I think aerobics are very important for your heart and is needed as well, but I do think weight training actually works better for weight loss.

Reply:I agree, weight training is imperative to becoming healthier and looking better! I don't do any serious aerobics at ALL and I have seen nothing but positive changes in the way my body looks… I think too many women are worried that they will look bulky so they avoid the weights. I've heard that a lot.
Being female, I can say it is most definitely not true… I do have more muscle, but I look toned and slimmer, not bulky at all (LOL except for the "still fat" areas!! and thats a different kind of bulk!! )

…oh, yeah, just had to add, women should also use weights because it decreases our risk of osteoporosis when we get older!
