Weight Loss Cover-Up Exposed!
Reply:I took Acutane a few years back and it made me very depressed. Along with the stress of my job it was quite overbearing. My Dr. put me on Effexor and I was the thinnest I have ever been in my life. I typcically eat more when depressed but not in this case. Some anti ds are used inconjunction with weight loss programs. Not all SSIs cause you to gain weight.

Reply:i've been on Lexapro 20 mg for one year and gained about 20 pounds without changing my eating habits. I actually started eating less when i noticed the weight creeping on and nothing i would do would help. So, yes, lexapro is like all other AD's. I stopped taking it about 4 weeks ago and havent had any weight loss even though i barely eat anything. How depressing!!! But i need to go back on it because i'm too emotional without it, weepy all the time. I think ad's mess up your metabolism. Alot of people lose weight after stopping them but so far….nothing for me. Maybe it just takes a few months to get completely out of your system.

Reply:Yeah, Lexapro is the new one (mentioned in my first post on this thread). They've been working on the weight gain angle, from what I understand, so presumably they've got that one worked out (interesting considering the drug companies have been blaming all the weight gain on overeating).
It is "funny" that the two side effects you hear about with SSRIs are weight gain and lack of desire/ability "in the bedroom". Neither would seem to help someone overcome depression. And looking at your list of side effects, it seems they still need to work on that latter one!!!

Reply:I'm very curious about the source of your information because this is a very common problem with SSRIs, from my experience. (Listing Paxil as "no mention of weight" is absurb [or perhaps deliberately deceptive] because it is the one I have seen most often with people gaining TREMENDOUS amounts of weight.) Judy, I was also under the impression that antidepressants would cause weight gain since it's something we tend to hear so much about. I pulled up some information in another thread for LS (http://{$MySite}/boards/showthread.php?t=214663) Here is the gist of it:
Lexapro is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and it should not cause weight gain, it might even cause weight loss as one of the side effects is a decrease in appetite. You can read about it here [moderator approved website]: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/uspdi/500409.html
More common side effects include:
Constipation; decreased interest in sexual intercourse; diarrhea; dizziness; dry mouth; ejaculation delay; gas in stomach; heartburn; inability to have or keep an erection ; impotence; increased sweating ; loss in sexual ability desire, drive, or performance ; nausea; stomach pain ; sleeplessness; trouble sleeping; unable to sleep; sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
Less common
Abdominal pain; chills; cough; decreased appetite; diarrhea; fever; general feeling of discomfort or illness; headache ; joint pain; loss of appetite ; muscle aches and pains; nausea; not able to have an orgasm; pain or tenderness around eyes and cheekbones; runny nose; shivering; shortness of breath or troubled breathing; sneezing ; sore throat; stuffy nose ; sweating; tightness of chest or wheezing; trouble sleeping; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting
I was a little surprised that weight gain was not listed, and frankly, that all these possible side effects were – I realize not everyone will experience all symptoms, but some of them seem almost as bad as what they are supposed to be treating.
LS (and everyone else!), you can check any drug you're curious about at the National Institute of Health's database http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginformation.html

Lose Weight Eating Healthy
Reply:As you state, washee, the impact of medication is an individual matter . . . so getting back to the original post, it seems quite clear the person is facing a potential weight gain (and is in LOTS of good company for gaining weight on Prozac).

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about what the manufacturers of these things say about them, I am talking about actual people's experiences. The companies are very quick to say, oh, any possible weight gain is because people are eating too much. And physicians seemed only to willing to buy into that. (And somehow they neglect the question "Well, why are people suddenly eating more when they start taking these medication?") Naturally . . . how else do people gain weight but pigging out, not exercising self-control, etc., etc. And yes, I know that there is some increase in eating, but for many it is not enough to account for all the weight gain. I was told by someone who reads research more than I do that studies are indicating some impact on metabolism. Sorry I can't source this but could find out if anyone is interested.
guy . . . not everyone gains weight on any of these medication. In fact, MOST people do NOT. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict what will happen with you. The weight gain for most of those who do gain weight seems to come from a combination of eating more PLUS presumably some impact on metabolism. Monitor you weight carefully over the next couple of weeks . . . you would notice any difference in that time. Step up exercise to be on the safe side. The newer drugs, like Lexapro, have been reformulated with the aim of eliminating these side effects, so let's hope for the best.

Reply:I just recently started Lexapro and I DO NOT want to gain weight! Would weight gain be due to the fact that Lexapro makes you more hungry/want to eat more so you do that and then gain weight, or, even if you continue to eat the same will you gain weight!? I really need an answer!!!

Reply:Auntjudyg, I think you hit the nail right on the head with this one… All you have to do is go on over to the "Depression" boards, to see TONS of posts of weight gain as a side affect with people on AD's.
And I just wanted to comment on your name, guy–I love it! It is so cute! :jester:

Reply:Weight gain is indeed one of the side effects SOME people experience while on prozac. This is the case with all the SSRIs, except the newest one (what is it? Lexapro? Or am I mixing that with another med?) I haven't seen any reports either way on that one. Some SSRIs have an anorexic effect on SOME people, but actually studies of longer term use have shown that most of those people ended up gaining weight in the long run.
I have never heard of any of the individuals who do experience weight gain being able to loss that weight while still on prozac (or any of the other SSRIs). People have taken off the gained weight after stopping the SSRI or switching to another med, but it is generally a little harder to get the momentum going for weight loss than previous times the person has tried.
