Smell = calories? I have a question [brownies] [muffins]
I was wondering, say I passed a bakery and smell all the muffins, breads, brownies, cupcakes they had for like 3 hours. I do not eat anything but smell. By the end of three hours of the smell, I do not have calorie intake?
So I think I can ask you the number of calories of food smell?

Reply:I agree with Full. When my family eats pizza and all that and I smell it I don't get, "heavier". I don't believe you can take calories in just by smelling them. I agree with the others and I actually think you have to digest it!

Reply:guy,
I wasn't tortured by the smell of chocolate. I just could smell it for a few weeks.I always liked chocolate, and no matter where I was,or what I was doing. It was weird!! I could all of a sudden smell chocolate. But I did not give in to it.And if I had it would have been a disaster for my diet. So I did not give in to the temptation. No matter how my body reacted ,or didn't react. And I'm sure glad I didn't,because I have been on Atkin's 22 weeks today, and the rewards have been worth it.Had I given in to temptation I would not have lost the 66 lbs. I hope I've lost more than that by now.But I'm not do to weight in at my Drs.for a while yet.

Reply:You don't intake any calories, but you may have set into motion several biochemical reactions.
The digestive process is complex and involves smell along with taste. If your body *anticipates* receiving an aromatic sweet treet, it will start preparing itself by releasing insulin (like a previous poster mentioned) as well as saliva and other digestive juices. If it doesn't get anything to work on, you will be "out of balance" for a little while.
Ultimately, this is not great for your metabolism. It is also part of the reason why artificial sweeteners don't work well.
So, go ahead and have a small portion of your craved food rather than stand there and torture yourself for hours. Your body will be happier. ![]()

I agree with you. I could smell chocolate for weeks when I first started Atkin's.But I still lost weight ,and don't smell or crave it anymore! I certainly didn't gain any weight by smelling it.I have been on Atkin's diet for almost 22 weeks.I have not gained any weight at all by smelling anything.

Reply:Sorry, I can't agree with that logic. A calorie is a unit of energy. You need to ingest something to use it.
Is your toddler suffering from food intolerance symptoms?
Reply:I think, indirectly, yes, by causing cravings and maybe stimulating insulin production, same as when you use a lot of artificial sweetener, which also increases insulin outpouring.
