Stop worrying about the weight [body mass index bmi] [body mass index]
People seem different ways to decide on a goal. For most people, the weight, which is obviously misleading because it does not tell you how much of that weight is fat. This is the same reason why body mass index (BMI) is essentially useless. Body fat is what you should be worring about, but even that is not enough. You should also track how many muscles you have and whether the body enough.
The maximum level for men is 15% and 22% for women. So if you would look at an ideal weight chart and find your ideal weight is supposed to be the minimum and maximum body fat percentage above the applicable, would you come up with a figure for the minimum amount of muscle you have to have.
For example, if a man of 58 “, the lowest my body weight can be according to a chart ideal weight is 131. So in a maximum of 15% body fat, I need at least 111 pounds of muscles on me, which fortunately have I than.
So more if you just concentrate on weight, you make a mistake. And if you only have to worry about body fat, youre also making a mistake. The best thing to do is figure out how much your muscles need. Then decide what you want your body fat level. If you do, youll never have to worry about your weight. Just something to think about.
Reply:never said it was a true measure, and wasn't even debating that point. Was discussing that BMI is still a guide used to assess body fat, thats all.
you said body fat was all people should worry about and BMI didn't look at that….was just saying it does, just in a different way.
Reply:If it only measures weight and height, then it's not a true measure of body fat. According to BMI, Governor Arnold would be considered obese because of his weight. Measures like BMI and weight are overly simplistic, which is why they're employed by insurance companies.
Reply:Body mass index (BMI) is measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women
BMI Categories:
· Underweight = <18.5
· Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
· Overweight = 25-29.9
· Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
it is still a percentage, just differentiated in how stated from %body fat ready by caliper.
and yes you are right about surface fat vs. actual, but that is why it is just a guide, just like BMI, just like reading cholesterol..the only true way to read that is to take a draw from the deep tissue muscle itself, blood is just a guide.
used as a great way to sell drugs to lower, but really and truley all tests have percentage of error, or validitity.
Reply:BMI(body mass index= the percentage of fat composition) is the term used in comparing body fat percentages.
I think you meant….height/weight maybe?
and for all that don't know…the best way to get your %fat measured is in a water displacement test, as calipers are only as good as the person taking the measurement, can have a higher percentage of error, but not a bad way to test.
BMI = Weight (in pounds) x 704.5 / (Height (in inches) squared. It has absolutely nothing to do with percent body fat.
And not only are calipers only as good as the person performing the testing, the method itself is flawed because it only measures surface fat on the assumption that half a person's fat is surface fat and is similarly distributed.
Reply:For men age 20-40, the ideal body-fat percentages is 15-20%.
For men age 50+, the ideal body-fat percentages is 22-23%.
For women age 20-40, the ideal body-fat percentages is 18-23%.
For women age 50+, the ideal body-fat percentages is 26-27%
just wanted to point out age does make a difference.

I might also add that different cultures will vary with these "ideal's" It is more a gage really.
Thank you for your post. For me,the body mass index shouldn’t be taken as completely useless.Even though it is not 100% accurate it can still be used as an indicator of a diseased factor.Have we forgotten that for many years,Doctors used it to measure the risk value of heart diseases?I hope you won’t mind visiting my site for more facts about body mass index.
