Reply:I've been a vegetarian since I was 13 (I'll soon be 29). Make sure that you're getting enough protein, vitamins, and minerals that you need. You need to pay special attention to vitamin b12, iron, and calcium. B12 is only in animal foods, seaweed, supplements, and fortified foods. I agree that you should eat whole grains, but I've always eaten lots of bread (I'm 5'2'' and 110 lbs.). Do you get enough exercise?

I have the same problem!
I am trying to lose weight, I've been a veg for almost 6 years and it seems harder to lose weight as a veg than it was as a carnie.
If you ever learn the key to success in this matter, plz let me know, and good luck!
101 Practical Weight Loss Tips
Reply:I can definitely relate to you. I too am vegetarian (actually, vegan & I'm 18 years old) and am struggling to lose weight. I've been vegetarian for almost 6 years and just recently put on a ton of weight (still trying to find the cause, suspecting Risperdal.. I initially lost about 90lbs when I went veg). When you eat breads and grains, eat whole grains! STAY AWAY from processed and refined grains like white bread, white rice, and white pasta! Whole grains all the way! But try to cut down on them all together if you can. Try to start replacing dairy with fortified soy, e.g. calcium & vitamin D fortified soymilk. I'm not saying to become a complete vegan, but reducing dairy/eggs will reduce cholesterol and fat. For years, everyone has been telling me to avoid processed and refined foods as much as possible.. Lately, I've been taking their advice and eating whole, fresh foods, and so far I'm feeling great! Give it a shot, good luck! [ removed ]

Reply:Definitely drink more water and lay off the bread. Also, are you getting protein from anywhere? You have to have protein.
Being a vegetarian doesn't shelter anyone from gaining weight. Vegetables can put weight on too, if you eat too much. It's all calories. And it IS possible to gain weight eating vegetables if you're still taking in more calories than you're burning.
Cut out the bread (or at least cut back considerably) drink more water and get protein from somewhere.

What are your portions like? I know people who are vegetarians that weigh 300lbs and it's because of their portion sizes. You might try cutting portions and you should probably cut down on so many starches.
Weight Loss Revelations
Reply:Hi, I have been a vegetarian for 35 years so obviously i am not a teen. One thing which is a big problem is the number of calories in fast foods. the vegetarian alternatives, when you can find them sound really low in calories but if you check with the vendor you will be amazed. I used to eat the vegie tostada at a well known place thinking it was mostly lettuce and black beans and low cal fresh salsa so it was good for me. One day i looked on their website and discovered the tostada had 1800!! calories. The 7 layer burrito at another place is also loaded with calories and small enough that you might eat 2 for a meal thinking they are pretty low in calories. So watch out when you eat out!
Life-Changing Weight Loss
Reply:Do you eat dairy products? I was vegetarian for a long time, but did eat eggs (not much) and cheese (TOO much). Once I gave those up and tried to cut back on the amount of oil (fat) in my food, I lost weight easily with regular exercise. I was very overweight, but have lost 100 pounds and am at my goal weight. I never once worried about carbs (although I prefer whole foods like potatoes and less refined stuff like whole wheat pasta and brown rice to processed white rice/pasta anyway). So my recommendation would be, try going vegan!

Reply:I agree about the bready stuff! I am a carb counter, but even non-carb counter find that too many grain products can hinder weight loss. Cutting back and substituting some legumes might help!
Good luck!

Reply:Do you drink water? You have to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. That will help your system SOOO much! Also, try changing your workout routine, make it a bit harder or incorparate something into it. guy had a good suggestion on cutting carbs back. You dont need to get rid of all of them, just lower it some. I cut back on carbs and started counting cals as well and have lost about 4 pounds in 2 weeks. THats right on track. losing 1-2 pounds a week.
Reply:Well, seeing that eat a lot of bready type things could be one of the main problems…I am not a carb counter, but I know that breads have LOTS of carbs. I count calories, but I also try and make sure I dont go overboard w/ carbs. I would definitely cut out the breads…not ALL of them..but just try not to eat so much…and figure out how many calories you need in a day, and subtract it by 500 or so. And if you can, count the calories you eat..keep a food journal. So if you need 2000cals a day, only eat 1,500. It does work. I have been dieting close 4 months now, and by counting calories have probably lost about 18-20lbs. Good luck! BTW – dont forget fruits! Do you eat much of them?
