Reply:I admire your dedication for being able to stick with low carb, and if you can keep it up you won't have the same problems I did. Some people have an easier time with it than others. I hated being told what I couldn't have, and got tired of eating the same thing over and over because it was the only thing I could have.

I just want to be healthy without being on a diet 24 hours a day for the rest of my life! :)

I guess the difference is after 46 years of yo-yoing up and down. I am bulemic too and if I ate anything I would puke it back up. Didn't need to binge I puked it anyway.

For over a year I have not made myself vomit once. I just polished off a chocolate covered ice cream bar (low carb of course) It has to come down to is your mindset. Instead of saying, &;I hate being told what I couldn't have&; say, &;I don't want that because it's not worth it.&; Regardless of whether or not you low carb this goes for you the rest of your life. With Low carb my choices are not limited. Gracious have you checked the web out for recipes! They are beyond numerous so you shouldn't have to eat the same things all the time. I certainly don't. I posted my Cheesecake recipe on the site Under diet and Nutrition: It is page 5 of Another Low-carb question. If your interesed in it. It tastes amazing with no guilt as it is just 7 carbs a slice.

You do not have to deprive yourself of amazing tasting foods.

Reply:I was just joking about the brownie thing. I was just trying to say that foodwise, our lifestyles are different and that I tend to not eat a lot of the different kinds of things that my fiance eats; not so much because I'm restricting myself, but simply because most of the time I just don't want to.

Overall I do have a healthy mindset about where I am in life. I'm proud of myself for going from a size 18 to a size 6, and wouldn't go back to the way I was for anything in the world. I realize now how unhappy and unfulfilled I was, and how much happier and brighter things seem now. Still, everyone gets frustrated once in a while and that's where I was this morning. It's a long road to undo the damage you cause when you go about something in an unhealthy way. I'm working on undoing the damage I caused when I was basically anorexic, and that takes a while. In the meantime I sometimes think that I'm farther along than I am in that process and try to overdo it. Then I see the negative results and feel down because I realize I still have a while to go. It takes time, but it's something I'm continuously working on.

I also did low carb for about a year and thought that it could be a permanent way of life, but after a while I started to feel deprived, and when I started adding the carbs back into my diet I gained back the 30 pounds I lost, plus some. Having graduated with a degree in biochemistry since then, I understand what the problem was now. When you completely cut out certain foods from your diet, your body quits putting it's energy and effort into manufacturing the enzyme machinery to process those foods. It wonders why it's wasting valuable energy making this molecule to break down a food it's not going to be given anway, so it stops making them. Then comes the sabotage. Any time you eat those foods again, the machinery to process them no longer exists and your body isn't sure what to do, so it does the only thing it knows and stores them up as reserves – which ultimately showed up on my hips!

I tried tons of different &;diets&; but always lost the weight and gained it back again (probably for the same reason I mentioned about the carbs). I tried phen phen, I did low carb, I did low fat, I did the cabbage soup thing, I did slim fast, etc. And always came to the same result.

I finally decided that the only way I was going to get anywhere and see any results was to do it the old fashioned way (granted I went too far with it). Today, I'm a huge advocate of not considering myself on a &;diet&;, but rather making healthy food choices and eating a variety of foods, but the key being to eat them in moderation.

Over time I have made adjustments and tried to become more healthy and balanced. I've kept the weight off for more than 3 1/2 years, so it really has been an entire lifestyle change for me. Before, I ate whatever I wanted (usually VERY poor nutritional value) and never exercised. I still can eat the things I want, but WHAT I want has changed – A LOT. That's the reason it IS a lifestyle change, which is the only way to make any weightloss permanent.

I admire your dedication for being able to stick with low carb, and if you can keep it up you won't have the same problems I did. Some people have an easier time with it than others. I hated being told what I couldn't have, and got tired of eating the same thing over and over because it was the only thing I could have.

I just want to be healthy without being on a diet 24 hours a day for the rest of my life! :)

Reply:If you do not change your mindset you will not be able to continue your
walk much longer.

Any diet will work but what you need is a way of eating for life.

You must come to the realization that that brownie isn't worth it.

Now in my case I do low carb. I can tell you my typical day and you tell me if I am depriving myself. Since I have reached my goal weight.

I am not an eggie person but can eat them sometimes. If I did want an egg I could eat as many as I wanted and stop when I was comfortably full. Topped with cheese or any meat I wanted.
But for breakfast I usually eat a bowl of carb sense cereal that I load with real butter, splenda and heavy cream.
couple of cups of coffee with half and half.

Lunch is varied often what sounds good to me.

Hamburger without bun and a salad, I could have as many hamburgers as I could eat comfortably.
Tuna salad on lettuce
lunch meat on a low carb wrap

Dinner

Grilled steak, chicken, pork chops whatever. No limit on protein
broccoli, mashed cauliflower (with sour cream and chives) lovely substitution for mash potatoes.

For a snack, low carb ice cream, or strawberries and whipped heavy cream with splenda, or a shake made with low carb icecream with either strawberries and heavy cream, no sugar added peanut butter or no sugar added chocolate syrup. Etc.

I never count calories, restrict my portions just refuse to eat heavy carbs and sugar.

It is a mindset you must decide what works for you and what you can live with forever. I destroyed my metabolism but I have no need to worry about this the way I eat. I lost nearly 50 pounds and haven't gain an ounce in about a year. I weigh 107 and wear a size 6 jeans.

If you could SEE my abs underneath the extra skin, I probably could! I know I have a 6-pack under there, I just can't see it.

I can't complain about not making ANY progress. I've come a long way, but it's a long road and sometimes I just get tired. I don't want to be 200 pounds again, but sometimes I get jealous of the people who never have had a weight problem and just don't seem to have to consider every detail of their diet and exercise plans (if they have them!). &;Why can't I be like them?&; – Everyone knows the feeling.

Hopefully I can pull myself out of this rut and get on with it. It doesn't help very much that I just moved in with my fiance who can eat whatever, whenever he wants. Sometimes it's hard to maintain my willpower when I'm putting my proteins and vegetables into the shopping cart and he's tossing in taquitos and boxes of brownie mix!

Your metabolism is yours and it's too late to get your old one back so you must not compare yourself to those who are able to eat more.

Be proud of your weight loss and know that others would give anything to be in your enviable position even if it means stopping at ONE slice of pizza.

I, too went through my low-carb &;faze.&; I found that ignoring carbs and hewing to a STRICT calorie limit allowed me to eat anything I wanted without gaining (losing a bit more in fact,) though not as much or all at the same time.

Remember, too, that aside from an increased metabolic efficiency, a 200 pounder burns FAR more calories just wwalking down the street than a 130 pounder. You are a new you and must adjust.
