Tracking steps with pedometers . Help! [pedometer] [owned company]
Hi there! : Wave: I recently bought a pedometer of a private company. I have read that somehwhere pedometers are a great way to measure whether you * Re active enough throughout the day. The problem is, my little pedometer came in the mail, but did * come up with any information about how many steps I should strive for throughout a given day. The only thing was it came with a small list of activities and how many “clicks per minute” i * ll get enrolled in them.
does anyone know how many steps I should strive for? * I am a 20-year-old woman. (* I do not know if that makes any difference or not. Did i mention * d case.) I just feel that having this new pedometer is a complete waste of time (and money) if I * m not some are well used. please help me! I despise feeling stupid! Thank you in advance for your replies. : Cool:

Reply:there is a little clicky thing inside of the pedometer. every time your foot hits the floor, the little thing in the pedometer clicks and it is counted as a step! pretty cool, huh?

Reply:Ty Seagoddess! I think I can get away with a pedometer on my waist better than on my ankle. But, what I can't understand how does a "ped" know you are actually "taking" a step?

Reply:Can someone tell me what a pedometer costs?
I'm about ready to go back on my diet and want to start walking more and am thinking of getting a pedometer. Knowing myself, I'd walk more just seeing how sedentary I RELLY am! Is there a better one than others? Do you wear them on your ankles? I'd like to have one that doesn't show on my body due to where I work, cause they might not allow me to wear it.
Thanks all for your replies!

Reply:Before I started keeping track of my steps, I baselined them for 3 days and then determined what my daily average was. The goal is to increase my steps by 7, 500 per day over a 2 week period. Step by step instructions were given on the link. If you need it again, let me know.

Reply:thanks guy. i*ll keep that in mind. i live a pretty active lifestyle already, so i*ll try to aim for even more. 18,000 sounds like a good goal. i*ll let you know if i reach that today. (i think i will. i usually take about 5,000 "steps" doing 45 minutes on an elliptical machine.) i*m going to the gym in a few minutes here. my husband wants to go at noon. talk to you later…

i was wrong. yesterday on the elliptical i took almost 6,000 steps in 35 minutes plus a 5 minute cooldown.
today wasn*t as successful though; i*ve only taken 14,670 steps so far, and i*ll probably be in bed within the hour. i figure it*s better than 10,000 though..or even 13,000. i did ok. ![]()
Reply:Crystal, if you are already walked over 13,000 steps, then you will probably need to walk approximatlely 18,000 steps in order to see any benefits. 10,000 steps is for someone who is extremely inactive and barely mores around.

Reply:woo~hoo! thank you both for your replies. i wore my pedometer yesterday and at the end of the day it said i had taken 13,896 steps. i know i took more than that though because i didn*t remember to put it on until it was already about one o*clock and i had been awake since 6:30. if 10,000 is all i need then that doesn*t sound hard at all. (especially because i beat that yesterday when yesterday felt like a lazy day to me!) again, thanks for your input. i will definitely check out that website.

Reply:I've been using a guide from Prevention magazine.
Basically you baseline the amount of steps for a few days. You set a goal and increase the amounts of steps that you take per day to reach your goal. Once you have maintained your goal for 8 wks, you set a new one.
(I've edited the link to the magazine in order to comply with the posting guidelines)
Reply:10,000 steps per day. That's what they recommend in Japan.
However, I think it really depends on you. 10,000 per day seems pretty low to me. I can do that much taking a walk with my husband. You might want something higher. The more active you are, the more weight you'll lose. Even though 10,000 is what they recommend in Japan, that's just for good health maintenance. If you wanna lose weight, you might wanna shoot for something higher.
How many steps do you do? Maybe you should just wear it for a few days, look at your average number of steps per day, and make your goal something a little higher.
