Weight gain w / Train! [fluctuation] [weight gain]
Ok, I lost weight in the past and its not so hard. This is my fourth consecutive week to get back into the exercise thing. The thing that inspired me was that I hit 190 pounds on the scale. For me, thats not acceptable. So after about two weeks I was down to 186, then the next week I was 189. I thought, okay its probably just a normal fluctuation. This morning I weighed 190.5! Im so stinkin frustrated. How in the world I could in weight, even if only half pounds? I go three mornings and three nights, five to six times a week to the gym. I do biking, eliptical (ski machine), the treadmill and conditioning equipment. Ive even taken a few classes, body pump with the dumbbells! I feel better, but my clothes are not loose and I do not weigh more! Any advice? It has never taken so long for some small results. Thanks!

Reply:Get your thyroid checked! I had the same exact problem, plus several other symptoms, including constipation, depression, low body temperature, etc. Do some research and see if you have any other of the symptoms for low thyroid, then get a comprehensive test done, including free T3, free T4, and TSH. I worked out religiously for 6 months doing a full body workout 3 times per week and a low carb diet and GAINED WEIGHT! I knew something was wrong.

Reply:Here's a web site where you can enter age, weight, fitness level, etc. and get back a target heart rate for weight loss. Just so you know what a reasonable number for you should be: http://exercise.about.com/cs/fitnesstools/l/bl_THR.htm. For me, I'd lose more at the 140 number and get close to anaerobic at the 150 rate.
If you're doing that much cardio & not seeing significant changes, you really are going to have to look at your caloric intake. Remember only LESS THAN 30% of your total intake should be from fat (good or bad). That's about 43 grams of fat for a 1300/day diet.
I agree with the other poster who said you're going to have to journal your intake. Perhaps look at the fitday.com site which is FREE and allows you to track every single calorie you take in. PLUS it can run a lot of reports to show you where your calories are coming from, how you're burning them, how you're doing to nutrition goals, etc. Great tool to figure out what's going on with your body & weight loss.

Reply:Well here is my basic week. Monday I go in the morning and do about 30 minutes on the bike or ski machine and my heartrate is around 140-150 I think. Then on Monday evening I go and do 30 minutes on the bike or treadmill and some muscle conditioning machines (3 reps of 12, usually 5-8 machines working different muscles each time). Thursday is the same as Monday. Tuesdays I only go in the morning and Wednesdays I only go in the evening. I usually don't go Fri-Sat. Sometimes I go on Friday morning. Do you think this is too much? I don't feel like it is, I feel like it's not enough but of course that's probably because I am so determined and not seeing any results yet. I probably wasn't totally accurate in saying that I haven't seen ANY results because when I look at myself in the mirror I can see that my shape has change. I don't look as "soft", I guess you can say. My waist seems a little more defined but very little. But like I said, I can't tell a difference in my clohthes yet or on the scale???
Thanks for everyone's response!

Reply:BTDT — not sure of what you're working out at but if you could be working so hard that you're actually hitting an anaerobic state (heart rate so high that you no longer burn fat). I was AMAZED at how quickly I hit that state during my workouts and once I got a monitor started to drop pounds and see results.

Reply:Sounds like you may have to alter your diet. Because if you were gaining muscle, those areas where you gain would be shrinking, and your clothes would fit better. You may want to cut calories, if you are, then I'd see a doctor. Sounds very frustrating, I'm sorry.
