What is the exercise of opinion? [burning calories] [heart rate]
Ok, . so you all were telling me about the exercise of not more than 60 minutes or I would add muscle and burn fat or something. Now what exactly is considered exercising? Because sometimes when I exercise at the gym real close as one hour, and after that I have for cycling and walking around for a few hours seated, not down so much. Yeah I think that is burning calories, not my heart rate up tho. So this is regarded as the exercise or not? I do not since I do not get sweaty or anything.

Reply:alright.. ill do that now. besides.. i did take your advice about not exercising for more than an hour. even though i didn't quite understand, i took your word for it. i was just wondering if every day stuff (such as walking, bicycling etc. but at a slower pace than when actually exercising) are considered in that one hour as well.
Nobody's suggesting that after an hour of GOOD working out, you should remain entirely sedentary the rest of the day. If you work out, but then ride your bike home from the gym, to school, take a walk with the family, etc. you'll be just fine. It still is exercise, but it's more of the exercise of living a normal life. Go ahead and (for example) work out in the morning, then that evening take the dog for a nice long romp in the woods. That's not going to hurt you, it's just part of having a healthy lifestyle. I think more than anything, what people were trying to discourage you from doing is going to the gym, taking a cardio class for an hour, lifting weights for an hour, then doing another hour on some cardio machine.

Reply:I don't understand either. they're saying your body feels like it's being hunted by tigers. so to survive it better start storing fat and burning muscles. while i would like to have my muscles to run and keep my endurance up when being chased after by a tiger…. i wouldn't prefer the extra fat that will slow me down and exhaust me.
Instead of creating new threads about this, I suggest you go back to the original thread and REALLY READ what people wrote to you. There were many people who gave you really good explanations as to why working out for three hours at a time is not a good idea. My comment about hunting tigers was a dumbed down version of what happens with your body. As you are very young, I figured the fairly tale version was the best approach. But other people identified exactly what happens in your body, what chemicals are produced, and the result of that process. Read those and really really try to understand them.

Reply:About how exercise is bad? Well, everyone knows the benefits of exercise but it can SOMETIMES have addverse effects. For instance, a hard bout of exercise (say an hour or so) lowers your immunity for that period of time so your much more likely to be at risk from an infection at that point in time. This is a bit contradicting because frequent exercise (as long as it isn't excessive) does help to boost your immunity.
There have also been situations where people have underlying heart problems that have never had reason to beleive that they had them, to suffer heart attacks and strokes during exercise (this happens to kids aswell as adults). Its rare but not intirely unheard of.
Of course, the pros of exercising far outweight the cons but it is important to realise that exercising does put stress on your body and thats why you should stop exercising if you feel any discomfort.
There are more examples but they apply to athletes.
Im not discouraging the exercise of course, i just thought it was a nice releif to learn about some of the adverse effects of exercise for a change cos all we ever really get told is that exercise is great

Reply:I think thats a myth cos it doesn't make sense. How would we explian athletes who do much more than an hours training in that case? Its probably not wise to do more than an hours exercise anyway as it does put a lot of stress on your body. Im currently doing a physiology degree and i've just finished a module of exercise. We had a lecture on how exercise is actually bad for you! That was a fantastic lecture

How To Boost Your Metabolism
Reply:I would say any physical activity is exercising. Even if your not getting your heart rate into your target area, you're still helping to keep your metabolism up so you'll burn more calories. You'll also help prevent muscle loss that can occur when dieting
Why are people saying that if you exercise for more than an hour you'll gain fat? That doesn't make sense. If anything, you'll burn more fat because you'll have exhausted your glycogen stores (glycogen is converted to glucose when you are active for more energy) It is only after you have used these stores that your body turns to burning more fat for energy so i dont understand that bit about adding more fat
