Why do not I lose weight? Z3 connection . [anti depressants] [losing weight]
Reply::wave:
Depression is one common symptom of hypothyroidism. I know that you said your thyroid tests were normal but here is some info for you. #1, the thyroid lab range for TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) has changed in March 2003 and many labs are not using it yet it used to be .5-5.0 it is now .3-3.0 (big difference). #2 the lab ranges of "normal" are not very accurate. I was diagnosed with my TSH at 1.61. I also had the ability not to lose 1 single pound dispite diet and exercise and to add insult to injury I was not even toning up just staying the same dispite all of my efforts. I didn't give up on the exercise though as your body needs it. Why don't you visit the thyroid board and read the thread on post our stories here and you may be surprised to see a similar story to yours there. You may even recognise similar symptoms. Good Luck to you.
Reply:Thanks for all the advice, guy. I really appreciate it. Yes, I will continue to take the Z3–I've read the same thing about delayed results, hopefully that's what it is with me. I'm not really sure what else I should be doing though… I guess I'll just try to begin working out again (I haven't been out of it for too long, so it shouldn't be too much of an effort, although it's never been my favourite thing to do). I will also read your post on the lemon juice. (I haven't read it as of just yet, so I have no idea what it is about) And thanks for all the advice. Do you think that's about the only thing I can do at this point?? Like I said, I've been off of the anti depressants for over a year now, and it seems like my metabolism is still next to nothing. I don't think there is anything I can do to rev that up, besides working out. Well at any rate, we'll see how things turn out I guess…. It's been slow, but hopefully this darn weight comes off at all.

Reply:Perhaps the anti-depressant and birth controll pills together? like in my case HRT and Prozac, it wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor. I was on birth controll pills many years ago, I did not gain weight, but grew breast cup, which I did not mind. At any rate, you are off anti-depressants right now which was the cause of your slow motabolism, so give your body a chance to get re-adjusted and don't give up, but don't let the weight gain cause a depression either, than you will be in a vicious circle, instead, fight back with all the positive energy you can have, and keep your tummy full all the time by drinking a lot of water, herb tea, keep chopped celery, cucomber, carrots handy and keep on munching and eating small portion, and excersie. perhaps you should continue for a little while longer z3, I read that some people see delayed results, perhaps you are one of them. Also, read my post on the lemon juice I just discovered, perhaps it is something you can try (it won't harm you at least)
take good care

Reply:Hi,
Thanks for the reply–Yes actually, I am on birth control pills! I've been taking them for probably about 2 years or so, but the reason I thought they weren't the culprit is because I've asked a few different doctors why it could be that I'm not losing any weight, and if it could be the pills, and they assured me that birth control pills DO NOT make you gain weight…. Do you think they were lying?? It better not be these pills–it's such a simple solution to such a huge problem. Not that I can just stop them anyways, but if it is them making me not be able to get the weight off then at least I KNOW what it is….. So anyway, to answer your question, YES I am on bc pills. Could they be contributing to myself not being able to lose weight?
Thanks again,
Cassi
Reply:Cassi,
anti-depressants can have such an effect on some people. October last year I went on Prozac, within 4 months I gained about 10 kilos (around 22 pounds), so I immediatly stopped the pills. I also have a hard time losing that weight, but my problem is a little different than yours, cause I went on HRT being pre-menopausal, are you by any chance on birth controll pills??
One thing I did notice thought that since then, I lose inches rather than weight, which is the important thing, perhaps you should keep a log of your measurement and you could be pleasantly surprised. don't give up your work out, at the long run it will pay off, but I know what you mean, it is very frustrating to do all the right things and not see the numbers on that scale change, but on the other hand giving up can lead to weight gain, we can gain so fast, but lose so slowly, it is not fair is it?
hang in there,
guy
